Bills, 7-9, Season over, 7 straight years watching playoff games that don't involve the Buffalo Bills.

This was an up and down year for sure. The Bills surprised people out of the gate with that 1-1 start on the road in the division back when Miami was believed to be a Super Bowl contender. After stumbling at home vs. the Jets, the Bills bounced back to get to 2-2 before hitting the major low point of the season. The Bears, Lions, Patriots games featured a Bills team that didn't look like they belonged in the NFL. After the bye with the revamped offensive line, the Bills turned things around winning 5 of 7 to get to 7-7 and into playoff contention before losing their final 2 games. Had Buffalo won those 2 games, they would be in and playing the Patriots in the wild card.

Let's not kid ourselves however, this season was lost in week 1. The Bills traveled on the road to New England (who is 11-1 vs. the Bills over the past 6 years) to play a Super Bowl contender in the Patriots. This game previewed everything that would plague the Bills all season. Buffalo jumped to a 17-7 halftime lead and on their first drive in the third quarter the Bills marched down inside the Patriot 10. Facing a 4th and 1, Jauron went for it. McGahee didn't know the down and the Bills line couldn't get enough of a push to get the one yard. If the Bills score on this drive and make it 24-7 or even 20-7, they would have won that football game. Instead, New England took the ball, drove 90+ yards and scored, then added 9 more to take a 19-17 lead. Jauron aimlessly wasted timeouts in this game early in the second half. Maybe it was the inexperience, or he used them to settle down his team as the momentum swung. Robert Royal proved how much of a moron he was and is with his illegal block in the back that cost Buffalo a first down on a third down play. This block in the back occurred after Price had the first down and was going down. Buffalo instead faced another third down and couldn't convert and New England got the ball, killed the final 7 minutes, and won the football game. This happened because of the lack of running game when it mattered, terrible clock management, and stupid plays by Robert Royal.

Had Buffalo won this football game, this season would have been different and Buffalo would have probably been in the playoffs. If the Bills were 2-0, they weren't blowing that game against the Jets.

Five Worst Plays of the year

5. On 4th and 2 in the final seconds of the first half vs the Titans, the Bills let Vince Young run 36 yards for a touchdown. I don't care who you are, there is no way you can let a quarterback scramble for 36 yards on 4th down at the end of the half for a touchdown. That is embarrassing. I was sick after this play.

4. Down 7-3 in week 7 verse the Patriots, Brady moved the ball down the field and faced a 3rd and long in Bills territory. The Bills had great coverage on the play, and with noone to throw to, Brady was conceding the sack and slid down. Then, Chris Kelsay proceeded to dive at Brady along with London Fletcher costing the Bills a personal foul and first down. NE scored a touchdown on the next play.

3. Leading 7-0 early in week 3 versus the Jets, the Bills faced a 4th and 2 from the 35 with the wind at their back. Buffalo had all the momentum and this game looked like it was going to be a rout. Instead of simply going for it, or kicking a makable field goal, the Bills try a fake. Mooreman makes a bad pitch to left tackle Jason Peters, who fumbles and the Jets recover. To make this play worse, it was 2nd and 2 from the 35 and the pills went inc. pass, inc. pass, fake FG. Everyone knows Willis runs all over the Jets. He would get those 2 yards no doubt.

2. On third and 5 in the opener versus the Patriots trailing 19-17, JP Losman hits Peerless price over the middle for was seemed to be a first down. Then at the tail end of the play, Royal decided to block someone from behind. The outcome of this play would have been no different had Royal not touched the dude. Instead he cost the Bills a first down and a chance to win the football game.

1. Robert Royal versus the Titans. Are you fucking kidding me. Every time i see this replay I nearly vomit. How do you not get your feet down. Evans fires a beautiful pass to Royal, wide open 8 years deep and he takes a 2 yard step with one of his feet. I would cut a guy who did that, seriously. Not only was this the worst play of the season, but it was the worst play of my football watching career. Robert single handedly cost the Bills the playoffs this season.

Five best plays of the year

5. Willis McGahee's 50+ yard touchdown run against the Jets. McGahee puked after this play. Willis showed his burst after hitting the hole and getting into the Jets secondary. McGahee plays tough like he always does versus New York leading the Bills to a win.

4. In that same game, Lee Evans make the nastiest move I have ever seen. He faked the quick slant causing two Jet defenders to completely bite and then streaked down the side line wide open for the touchdown. Losman made a perfect pass as the Bills dominated New York.

3. Versus Jacksonville, Roscoe Parrish had an 80+ yard punt return that was one of the nicest plays I have ever seen. He proved his play making ability, and with a little help from Kiwaukee Thomas, he was able to score opening up a 24-14 Bills lead.

2. In that same game, tied at 24 late, Losman moved to his left and fired a dart to the sideline to Roscoe Parrish who made an incredible catch. He went up, caught the ball, and tiptoed the sideline to get his feet in leading to the game winning field goal. Royal should take notes.

1. Against the Texans, JP Losman had many doubters. Can this guy win in the 4th quarter? Well, JP for the first time in his career won the Bills a football game. His last second pass to Peerless Price was gorgeous and this march started the Bills run. He proved that he can be the Bills starter for the future and a winner as well.

Biggest coaching disaster of the season

It makes me sick to think about this again but here it goes. The Bills used 3 timeouts in 2 plays against San Diego in the beginning of the fourth quarter. Buffalo completed a pass to the sideline to Price and it was ruled incomplete. The Bills, who didn't know the rules, thought it was a catch. So Jauron burns a timeout. The Bills have a commercial break to look at the play, see that Price's feet didn't come down and realize it was incomplete. Instead, they challenge the play. They lose the challenge and lose another timeout. They lost 2 timeouts in 1 play. Embarrassing. A guy that does that should be fired. Jauron called a timeout to challenge a play.

(Honorable mention: 3rd and 1 versus the Titans in the fourth up 2. Empty backfield, shotgun. WOW)

AWARDS

MVP
  • Lee Evans. This guy is the best player on the Bills football team. He is top 5 in the NFL in my opinion. His skill and attitude make him a great leader and his play is even better.
Most Improved
  • This has to go to JP Losman. After week7 people, including myself, were calling for Nall. Since then he has proved himself to be a quality starting quarterback for the Bills not only for now, but for the future.
Best Coach
  • Gotta give it to Bobby April. The Bills special teams was among the best in the league again.
Best Lineman
  • Jason Peters. He is going to be an elite player in this league.
Best Defensive Player
  • Nate Clements. Shut down corner, the Bills need to resign this guy. The past 10 games, he has been money in the bank.
Most Overrated
  • Aaron Schobel. This guy gets most of his sacks in garbage time. You cannot compare this guy to a Jason Taylor or a Julius Peppers. He is decent and had a good year but is not great.
Best Special Teamer
  • Moorman. He is a pimp.
Rookie of the Year
  • I am going to go with Whitner. This is tough because a lot of guys stepped in and did a great job. We didn't hear much about the 2 young safeties but that is because they didn't get beat deep often if at all. Whitner will be a solid player for the Bills for years to come.
Other last minute points
  • Jauron is a pussy and I don't like him as a coach. Down 16-7 facing 3rd and 8 in the fourth vs the Ravens he hands the ball to Anthony Thomas. The Bills were down 2 scores and not playing for anything. That was an awful play. He plays too scared and doesn't show enough emotion for me. I wish we hired Sean Payton when we had the chance but we are stuck with Jauron. Maybe with another year under his belt he will be more comfortable with his guys and take more chances.
  • McGahee is alright. I don't think the Bills used him properly and that is why he didn't do as good as he could have. I am not saying he is elite by any means. But he doesn't deserve the bad rap he is getting. Let this guy play out his contract. Look at Baltimore. Jamal Lewis didn't do shit for the first 3 quarters but the Ravens stuck with him. The Bills completely abandoned the run and became one dimensional as soon as the run looked like it might struggle.
There will be more posts soon to come. Bills in 07.
